Building a Concrete Pool: The Process
Understanding the steps involved in building a concrete pool will give you a better appreciation of the value and effort required. Here’s a breakdown of the typical process after we finalize the concrete pool design, which includes the size, depth (shallow and deep ends), and any additional features like benches, steps, or ledges.
Site Layout and Approval
Prior to breaking ground, we pin out the pool’s location in your backyard to ensure it flows well with the overall landscape design and provides space for all desired features (e.g., swimming area, seating, lounging, BBQ area). This step typically takes 1-3 hours with the homeowner.
Excavation
Once the layout is approved, our excavation team begins the concrete pool build process. This starts with laying protective mats and removing any fence posts to prevent damage. Then, we begin digging the pool, which usually takes 3-4 days.
Plumbing and Electrical Setup
We install the pool’s plumbing, including main drains, skimmers, and returns, as well as the rough electrical work for the pool lights. This step typically takes one day to complete.
Pool Framing
Next, we frame the pool structure in preparation for the shotcrete application. This step usually takes 1-2 days.
Rebar Installation
We install 10mm rebar spaced 12 inches apart throughout the pool. This process can take 3-4 days to complete.
Concrete Application
Once the plumbing, framing, and rebar are ready, we apply 12″-16″ of 35 MPa concrete with a 75mm slump. The rough finish ensures that the marbelite/pebblerock will bond properly. This process typically takes one day.
Tile and Coping Installation
After the concrete sets, we install the tiles and coping around the pool. This step usually takes two days.
Landscaping
Landscaping is the next step, as it needs to be completed before the marbelite is applied. During the first month, the marbelite goes through a curing process, during which it absorbs any water in the surrounding area, potentially leading to staining or scaling. Landscaping typically takes 2-10 weeks, depending on the complexity and size of the project.
Marbelite Application
The marbelite is applied to the pool surface. This process takes 1-2 days, and the pool is filled with water immediately using a water truck. The marbelite must stay hydrated, which is why the waterline is tiled.
Pool Start-Up and Chemical Maintenance
A pool service company will visit for two weeks to check chemical levels, brush the pool’s walls and floor, and ensure an even finish without scaling. Maintaining the correct chemical levels is crucial for the longevity and cleanliness of your concrete pool.
